Limitations
-
InMotion Hosting - Using a hosting account primarily for online file storage or archiving electronic files is prohibited. IMH Personal & Business Class hosting are shared hosting environments, so to ensure fast & reliable service to all of their clients, accounts that adversely affect server or network performance must correct these issues or will be asked to upgrade to a virtual or dedicated server.
-
Bluehost - Bluehost does NOT provide unlimited space for online storage, backups, or archiving of electronic files, documents, log files, etc., and any such prohibited use of the Services will result in the termination of Subscriber's account, with or without notice. Accounts with a large number of files (inode count in excess of 200,000) can have an adverse affect on server performance. Similarly, accounts with an excessive number of MySQL/PostgreSQL tables (i.e., more than 1000 database tables) or of database size (i.e., more than 3GB total MySQL/PostgreSQL usage or 2GB MySQL/PostgreSQL usage in a single database) negatively affect the performance of the server.
-
GoDaddy - GoDaddy has total email storage of 1GB. GoDaddy doesn't limit the amount of storage and bandwidth your site can use as long as it complies with the Hosting Agreement. Should your website bandwidth or storage usage present a risk to the stability, performance or uptime of their servers, we will notify you via email and you may be required to upgrade to a Virtual Private Server or Dedicated (Private) Server, or they may restrict the resources your website is using. While Deluxe and Unlimited Web Hosting Plans support and host unlimited Web Sites, owners of single plans with more than 400 Web Sites may experience periodic decreases in performance.

However, if your website starts to increase too much or you want to start a large project from the beginning you should use a web hosting package with unlimited bandwidth and disk storage because usually this package offer you a large number of bandwidth and disk storage to use.
Depending on the web host you can also pay for add-ons or expansions for your web host account in order to buy only a specific resource such as 100 GB disk storage, 1 add-ons domain or more bandwidth without needing to upgrade your web hosting account or to buy a new one offering you also resources that maybe you do not need.
Even if there are some opportunities regarding the unlimited disk storage and unlimited bandwidth, you should not use packages containing these unlimited resources for small websites such as blogs or presentation website because you will throw money without needing the “unlimited” resources.
What are the limitations?
Usually limitations exist at unlimited web hosting packages and they are represented by:
- Disk storage that usually goes up to a couple of GB. If you upload large files such as videos or photographs your storage will soon be full. Also, if you create large files such as documents, PHP, HTML and so on you can occupy a lot of your disk storage quickly. It is advised to not save your backups on your hosting packages because usually backups are represented by a tar archive which contains both the files and the database of your website combining them in one very large file. Also, check your website for trash and delete unwanted or expired files periodically.
- CPU which depending on your web host company, you can use only a certain percentage of it. If you are using multiple automatically cron services or another process to create something on your website and additionally you have a large number of users which can do the same thing, then definitely you will use a large number of percentage of the CPU, letting another website without this resource.
- Bandwidth that depending on the internet service provider (ISP) of your web host you can use a certain amount. If you have a high number of visitors you will use more bandwidth. Also, if you have a high number of visitors at the same time you will use even more bandwidth in a very short time. If you have reached the limit of your bandwidth your visitors will not be able to access your website and they will also receive a notification regarding that your website is either suspended or it reached its limitations.
- Other resources such as limited email accounts, limited FTP accounts, and limited databases which actually are directly related to the disk storage so more FTP account/ databases/ email accounts you have more disk storage you will use. Also, if you use more space for each email account, FTP account, and database you will actually use your own disk storage provided from the host and so you will quickly reach the limit of your disk storage.
Should You Pay For An Unlimited Hosting?
If you have the intention to create a large project or multiple projects using the same web host package, you should definitely pay for an unlimited hosting package. Also, you even if this hosting is not actually unlimited, it will offer you a lot of useful resources.
The best way to be sure that you are having almost unlimited hosting is to read all the web pages of your web hosting company and to search after details regarding unlimited packages or unlimited hosting/ resources. Also, you should pay for an almost “unlimited” hosting which is on a dedicated server, not a shared one and which offers you a large number of FTP accounts, databases, domain names, subdomains, email accounts together with a large disk storage, CPU, uptime, and bandwidth.
What does it mean Unlimited Databases and domains?
When you are reading about unlimited databases and domains at the feature section of a hosting package you should know that they are not actually unlimited and that your web hosting account can be either temporarily or permanent suspended if you pass a certain limit. In order to find out the specific limit for your chosen web host, you should either find and read the User Agreement/ ToS or ask your web host via chat/ ticket/ email/ phone/ Skype which are the limitations of databases and domains.
Usually, web host companies offer you a couple of domains and you can buy add-ons domain for almost £1 each one. However they offer unlimited subdomains and FTP accounts for your domains if you need and you can always use subdomains for testing, checking or for small projects and then you can move them to a new domain name with its own FTP account and database.
You should also know that you can install PHP and MySQL based application such as Joomla, WordPress, and Magento and so on into the same database using different tables. Actually, each of these types of application uses multiple tables but they have their own default prefixes so for WordPress is wp_. You can also change these, but using the default one should be easier to identify which table is used by which application/ content management system.
So as a conclusion, you do not have unlimited databases and domains because these are using disk storage and CPU when they are used to run some processes but if you choose a web hosting packages with unlimited databases and domains, you should actually receive a large number of databases and domains available for you.
Do you need an Unlimited Mailboxes or FTP accounts?
Even if there is no unlimited web hosting with unlimited resources such as unlimited disk storage, unlimited domains, unlimited databases, unlimited FTP accounts, unlimited mailboxes and unlimited CPU or bandwidth, you need to think if you really need these resources.
As I already wrote, you do not need to buy an unlimited web hosting if you have only a blog or a small project. You sure need these resources only for a big project or multiple projects on the same web host.
You actually do not need unlimited mailboxes especially if you do not have unlimited employees or unlimited persons available. The logic behind each mailbox is usually that each address is for a specific person or for a specific subject. An example of email address for a specific person should be this one: name.surname {at} top5hosting.co.uk while for a specific subject should be this one: careers {at} top5hosting.co.uk.
For the same reason, you do not need unlimited FTP accounts. You cannot have unlimited website administrators or designers or programmers for each part of a website or for multiple websites in order to create unlimited FTP accounts for each one. Also, you cannot have unlimited websites to create specific FTP accounts for each website.
In the same topic, I can definitely tell you that you do not need unlimited subdomains or databases because there is not possible to have unlimited projects/ web pages and content managements systems installed on your unlimited subdomains and databases.
Also, if you compress your files you would not need unlimited disk storage especially since large files are hard to download and are making your website very slow and your bandwidth will be quickly used.
It is a very good idea to buy unlimited web hosting especially if you really need it because you will get a lot of resources, however, you should know that there is no change to get unlimited resources and the main reason is that it is not physically possible. To have unlimited resources you should have unlimited servers with unlimited CPU, unlimited RAM, unlimited disk storage and unlimited bandwidth. In conclusion, you should also need unlimited space to store these servers. Not even NASA or other powerful organisations do not have this kind of resources.
Web host companies are using fake advertisement and marketing campaigns in order to attract more clients without explaining them that unlimited is actually very limited and without explaining that once you exceed the “unlimited” resources you can even lose your website for good without possibility of free migration or without the possibility of upgrading your web host account to a more “unlimited” one where you just receive more resources but not unlimited resources.
You should definitely compare multiple web host packages and choose the one that suits you the most even if it is “unlimited” or not, but even some unlimited web packages can offer you more or fewer resources.
